The news photographs were heart breaking. A long, seemingly endless line of hungry children was the predominant theme of the pictures. Accompanying those photographs were stories of how the civil war in Somalia had turned the country into a virtual anarchy. Schools were no longer functioning, effective government was non-existent, and warring factions were making it very difficult for medical and food aid to be delivered to those who were in desperate need. Responding to those photographs and news stories, political leaders from a variety of nations decided to send troops to insure safe delivery of food and medical supplies. In many of their speeches were sentiments such as this: "We will do what we can to bring justice to this war-torn nation. As we engage in this humanitarian effort, we and the people of Somalia must not lose hope or courage." -- Thompson
