A drill sergeant has to take a group of very different people and mold them into a unit that can act as one. He has to teach them how to march, how to do the simplest things in the military way. Why? Because their very survival may depend on it. The drill sergeant humbles them, making them learn and relearn things in some of the most extreme and trying conditions the recruit has ever known. The recruit learns that what was believed to be impossible only days before can and often has become easy and commonplace. The drill sergeant disciplines them when they make mistakes so that they may learn from their mistakes making the likelihood of the same mistake happening again less and less. The drill sergeant is responsible for their very lives. If discipline is necessary to make them understand this he will not hesitate to use it. All of this care and discipline teaches these recruits that he has their best interests at heart. It is they who must learn that all this training gives them the greatest chance for success. So it is with God: The discipline of the experience in the wilderness taught the people of Israel a new respect and love for God. It is a lesson worth remembering. -- Watson
