In the 1600s the astronomer Galileo was branded as a heretic and excommunicated from the church. The church condemned Galileo because they believed that his teaching was against the Christian faith. For Galileo was one of the first to determine that the earth was not the center of the universe. Instead he discovered that the earth revolved around the sun. And that was a startling revelation for the 17th century. And it was not until 1992, about four centuries later, that the Catholic church finally admitted that it had made a mistake in condemning Galileo. What we are called to do is nothing less bold than what Galileo did. We are called to share a new understanding of the world with the people of this planet. We are called to offer a vision of life to a world that in large part only knows death. -- Bowen
