Suppose today you threw a large, rough rock into a stream of water. What would you find if you came back in ten, 20, 30 years? If the rock and water were still there, you would probably find a much changed stone. It takes years and years for a stream of water to wear away at a rock, but eventually a rough rock can become a smooth, polished stone; one beautiful enough to take home and put on the window ledge to admire. For 30 years, that is what God was doing to John the Baptist: ever so slowly shaping John in the constant exposure of the desert and the direct heat of God's love and discipline. Like a rough rock becoming a smooth stone, John was prepared by God in the desert so that John might prepare the way for God. -- Schmitz
