A few years ago a drought fell on the eastern part of the United States. No rain fell for weeks. Creeks dried up, water reserves were low, wells went dry, farmers were concerned about losing their crops, and it was against the law to water your lawn or to wash your car. Thank God, there were some later summer rains which prevented a disaster. But the drought helped to remind us of how we take things for granted. We take God for granted. We take water for granted. Life cannot exist without water. In our text for today, taken from the seventh chapter of John's gospel, we are reminded that people also need living water -- that without the living water no one can have life eternal. And where does one go for this living water? To Jesus! He and he alone is the only one who can give us this living water! And what is the cost for the living water? It is absolutely free, and it will satisfy our needs and give us life eternal. -- Frank
