For convenience and safety reasons...

For convenience and safety reasons, the Bary family purchased an inexpensive artificial Christmas tree in the fall of 1974. It was not the most attractive tree, but they reasoned that its ornaments would provide the necessary beauty. Over the years their daughter and son crafted many special ornaments for the tree. Family and friends send gift ornaments for the tree. It wasn't long before the tree was barely visible through the huge number of ornaments and garlands. The children even joked about the tree being a handy ornament display rack. On the twentieth anniversary of the tree's purchase, Mom and Dad Bary decided to shop for a live Christmas tree and retire the old tree. They mentioned their decision to their teenage children, expecting a shared enthusiasm for the proposed change. Instead they were met with looks of disbelief. Their daughter said, "How can you even think of getting rid of our tree? That is the only tree I have ever known. It is part of our Christmas tradition. It still does a great job of showing off all those ornaments." As a result, a cherished tradition won the day. -- Thompson
