A pastor was eating dinner in a small restaurant next to the church where she would be conducting worship. As was her custom, she was dressed in her cleric shirt. Her waitress took her order and then came back to the table and asked, "Are you really a minister?" When she responded in the affirmative, the waitress said, "I wonder if you could do me a favor. I'll be glad to pay." Not knowing what to expect, the pastor nevertheless asked how she could help. "My mother's having an operation tomorrow. Can I pay you to pray for her?" "No," the pastor replied. The waitress' face fell, but before she could take her next breath, the pastor continued, "You can't pay me to pray for your mother, but I'll be glad to keep your mother in my prayers." The waitress breathed a sigh of relief and when the pastor asked her if she had time to join her for a cup of coffee, she quickly got permission from her boss. The next Sunday the waitress was in church. Today she is in her third year of seminary. She says of her experience: "Pastor Carol did the unexpected. She turned down my money and then she quietly witnessed to the Gospel. God's Spirit was truly at work in her and through her. I thank God for her ministry." -- Conroy
