The year was 1973 and I was a graduate of one of the world's premier theological seminaries. A cease-fire in Vietnam ended direct involvement of U.S. ground troops in America's most controversial war. Though an energy crisis held the world in its grip, President Nixon assured Americans that the power and wisdom of the nation and its leaders would enable us to meet any challenge successfully. Thus, despite troubles at home and abroad, America seemed -- and I was convinced I was -- fully prepared to take on the world.
