Respect for the white-haired...

Respect for "the white-haired ones" is nearly universal amongst Native American peoples. It is considered that wisdom comes from time and experience, and the counsel of the elders is sought after, especially in times of trouble. Since they have seen so much in their lives, they can contribute a sense of history to any discussion, share their observations on life, and offer advice. The Winnebago people take this belief even further. The grandfather and grandmother are the ones to rear the current generation of children! Mother and Father watch, and learn how to corral rambunctiousness, guide little spirits, hand on traditions, and teach values and behavior. Then, when their hair turns white, they are perhaps ready to take their turn in guiding the new generation coming up. Their children watch and learn, preparing to guide their grandchildren. It is this sort of respect for the accumulated wisdom of the elders that leads many of the Native cultures to call God "Grandfather" or "The Ancient One." -- Herrmann
