In his book People of the Lie, Scott Peck writes of a man who literally made a pact with the devil. The man was plagued by very disturbing thoughts, such as "The next time you drive over this bridge, you will be killed." He was unable to make the thoughts go away. He would get up in the middle of the night to drive over the bridge just to prove to himself that the thoughts were powerless and not true. Eventually the thoughts consumed him, however, and he ended up making a covenant with death, an agreement with hell. He made a pact with Satan that should he return to the bridge (or do whatever the voices told him not to), then Satan would cause his thought to come true (so, for example, if he did go back and drive over the bridge, he would be killed). It was a covenant with falsehood, with the Father of lies, to escape the reality of suffering and pain. -- Schmitz
