It would have been easy for John the Baptist to fool himself into believing that he was, in fact, more important than the One whose way he had been sent to prepare. His response to the coming of Christ is a study in humility. Such cannot be said of a woman who once encountered the famous Oxford scholar, C. S. Lewis, on a passenger train. Lewis had been on a walking tour and, rushing to catch the last train back, had come into his car looking disheveled and unkempt. A matronly woman, already seated, looked him over with disdain and asked with a sneer, "Do you have a first class ticket?" Dropping into his seat and catching his breath, Lewis replied, "Yes, madam, I surely do, but I'm afraid I'll be needing it for myself." -- Sherer
