Cyrus of Panopolis, fifth century Christian bishop in Phrygia, Asia Minor, nurtured an uncharacteristic cynicism about the faith he was called to advocate. One year at Christmas time he delivered what may be the shortest sermon in church history: "Let the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ be commemorated in silence, because the Word of God was conceived in the Holy Virgin through hearing alone. Amen." In fact, the actual event at Bethlehem was likely more in tune with the cynical bishop's description than with the gaudy celebrations which have marked the observation of Jesus's Nativity in the centuries since. -- Sherer
