The young chemist was at a critical point in her research. Her project had been progressing well over the past several months, but now she had to devote her full attention to it. She had left the laboratory early in the evening, eaten a quick supper, and tried to get to sleep. She was excited about the project and worried about what these next few days would bring. After sleeping for four or five hours this evening, she would have to go back to the laboratory between 1 and 2 a.m. for some critical analysis and additional work. On her way to the lab that night, she was one of the few people on the streets. Of course, very few people were out on the streets at this time of night: drunks leaving the bars, folks with strange shift hours, and a chemist intent on probing the mysteries of chemical interactions in the human brain. Upon her arrival at the laboratory, everything was in order. But after only a few minutes of analysis, she was stopped dead in her tracks. Upon additional analysis, the results were the same. She was astonished. This critical analysis had disproved one of her major hypotheses, but she was not discouraged. No, she was more fascinated now than ever before to discover the dynamics at work in this strange and mysterious chemical interaction in the human brain. She realized that she would be searching for much longer than she had originally expected. Many days and nights of analyzing and questioning and deciding awaited here, as she pondered this mystery of human life. -- Spencer
