In Peru, archaeologists have uncovered a "portrait vessel of a ruler" from the time of the Moche culture (300-700 A.D.). It is a fourteen-inch earthenware likeness of the head of a man, that was believed to serve as a symbol of royal authority. It would be sent from the center of power to outlying areas with various gifts -- like fabrics, perhaps jewelry and food staples. By this portrait vessel, the people would know who lavished these gifts upon them. Saint Paul writes that God lavished his grace upon us through Jesus. Jesus is the "portrait vessel," who reveals the generosity of God to his people. -- Molldrem
