The biblical understanding is that...

The biblical understanding is that men and women are two halves of one being. Adam was alone. Adam was not whole. Adam was lonely. The loneliness of Adam was rooted in his partialness, his incompleteness. When God recognized the loneliness of Adam, God created a partner, that creation might be complete. "Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh" -- Adam is part of Eve as Eve is part of Adam. Loneliness remains one of the most painful of human conditions; companionship one of the great benefits of marriage. Loneliness can be a terminal condition.
