We watch the pool balls...

We watch the pool balls rolling around the table. We know that they are moving in this way because something has hit them and sent them into action. If we hadn't known of a white ball plunging into them, we would wonder how it is that they are in motion. We would have to guess that something already moving had caused this effect.
Along the same line of reasoning, one of the traditional scholastic "proofs" for the existence of God asks us to observe the movement of the heavenly bodies and from there assume the cause of that effect to be the "Great Mover," i.e., God.
