Sometimes God uses those who lack pedigree in order to fine-
tune our attention and our focus. John the Baptist served such a function. Queen Caroline, the wife of England's King George II, once went to see an exhibition of portraits of English royalty, all executed by the painter Jonathan Richar-son. She observed the picture of the plain-looking Oliver Cromwell, the only commoner to interrupt the tradition of royal rule in England. Cromwell's severe dress made him a striking contrast, framed, and displayed between Charles I and Charles II. To Richardson the queen said, "Surely that personage is not a king." The artist replied, "No, madam, he is no king. But it is good for kings to have him among them as a memento." -- Sherer
