If you ever thought of...

If you ever thought of heaven as a place to escape from the busyness of life, look out. Saint John surprises us with his vision of heaven: a holy city. The heaven of the Revelation is no stroll through a garden, or a midnight walk on a Caribbean beach, or even a quiet sunset in the mountains. No. Saint John's heaven is described as a city full of people, things, and holiness.
Notice that this heaven comes down to us; we don't ascend to it (v. 2). Eugene Peterson in his book, Reversed Thunder writes, "But the biblical heaven is not a nice environment far removed from the stress of hard city life. It is the invasion of the city by the City. We enter heaven not by escaping what we don't like, but by the sanctification of the place in which God has placed us" (p. 174). Where has God placed you?
