God has called the believers...

God has called the believers in Thessalonica, Paul notes, "through our proclamation of the good news" (v. 14). What was it about Paul's preaching that produced such faith in his hearers? Some preachers depend heavily on style and technique. An actor, after listening to the Calvinist preacher George Whitfield, observed that this gripping evangelist could convert people simply by the way he said, "Mesopotamia." But Paul could urge his readers to "stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us" (v. 15). His preaching had content. The homiletical maxim proved itself in Paul's speaking: there is no substitute for substance.
