As a newly-ordained pastor...

As a newly-ordained pastor read a local newspaper, his eyes fell upon an obituary. As he scanned the details of that person's life, he noticed that a sister was a member of his congregation. His training in pastoral care quickly brought him to his member's home. Nervously he rang the doorbell. When no one answered, the pastor decided to check the back door. As he rounded the corner of the house, singing filled the air. The tune and the hymn were recognized immediately: "Despair Not, O Heart, In Thy Sorrow." It was one of the finest funeral hymns in his hymnal. What shocked him was that the song was being sung in German. After calling out his member's name, Rose came to the back door. "I never knew you could speak German." "Pastor, I haven't spoken German in over sixty years. A strange thing just happened in my room. As I was praying to God over the death of my brother, a song I had memorized in German over seventy years ago came to my mind and I started singing it." Today, when memorizing hymns and Bible verses is rare and when short-term memory loss is commonplace, one wonders what the Holy Spirit will be able "to call to one's remembrance." In all of life God's Word is meant to be carried in our hearts and expressed on our lips.
