Weather radar enables forecasters to detect storms from several hundred miles away. Since weather radar first became available as a forecasting tool in the 1960s, its technology has steadily improved. Now sophisticated Doppler radar systems can measure storm intensity and even pinpoint the speed at which a front is moving.
Yet, no level of sophisticated weather detection equipment can change the mind of someone determined to stay home when a hurricane hits. They must respond in a timely way.
The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse keeps Americans alert about trends concerning illegal drugs. They can educate us with a high degree of statistical accuracy on issues of drug abuse. For example, 46 percent of junior high students report that drugs are present in their school. Twenty-nine percent of high schoolers said a student died in their school the past year in a drug- or alcohol-related incident.
Yet, even when confronted with a barrage of facts, drug use among youth continues to skyrocket. Being knowledgeable about the times doesn't always translate into lifestyle changes.
One thing is for sure, our moral radar is on the blink, and we need more than what Doppler does to make things right! -- Webster
