Legend has it that the prophet Mohammed wanted to breed the finest horses in the world. After a long search the prophet had corralled 100 of the best horseflesh in existence. He placed the steeds in a corral located on the top of a high mountain. Below the horses in a verdant valley was a refreshing mountain stream flowing with the elixir of fresh, bubbling water. Mohammed did not allow the horses to have water for several days, testing them through their insatiable thirst. At last he opened the gate and allowed the horses to run amok toward the tantalizing stream located below them. As the herd raced toward the water with their mouths foaming, Mohammed blew a few notes on the bugle he had placed to his lips. Ninety-six of the horses refused to heed the bugle's call as their thirst led them to the flowing waters. Four horses, however, stopped in their tracks, awaiting their trainer's next command. Mohammed said, "These four mares will be the seeds of my new breed of horses called Arabians." It is Christ who has led us from the valley of darkness and sin to the corral of light where we trustfully hear his commands spoken in the voice of the Great Good Shepherd of the Sheep. -- Mills
