I shy away from believers...

I shy away from believers who make predictions about the Lord's return to earth. I firmly believe it will take place as our lesson today states. For a large part of this decade there has been a group given to predictions about end time. Lately, however, they have seemingly shifted from the end of the age at the end of the century to the Y2K problems expected in the new century. This must mean that they will be here to witness those problems. Changed agendas, perhaps.
Maybe the Y2K problem is a much-needed diversion. It might be good if there were some other diversions from some of the issues that crowd out the main issue -- the message Jesus taught about love. The Contemporary English Version of the Bible says that Christ died for us so that we could live with him, whether we are dead or alive when he comes. Love of Christ, love of neighbor, and love of self are all tied intimately in one cord. Everything else is secondary.
I hope that the church can get past the side issues. When you are asked if you are a Christian and your answer is, "Well, I go to First Church," you have missed the whole point. So don't miss the point. Christ will return. The time is secondary.
