In our small town a certain individual refused to believe that the space program was for real. This fellow was even the mayor of the town. But, try as one might, one could not change his mind on astronauts and spacecraft. All he would say was, "They can do anything with film." He was dead certain that the whole space project (NASA) was a fraud. A man could not walk on the moon or float in space tied to a tether. I can still see him at the one-horse garage in our town saying, "You will never make me believe it." At first that was the story of one of Jesus' disciples. He said, "You will never make me believe it" (or words to that effect). Being told that Jesus had visited among them when he was not present, Thomas simply would not believe it. "No way" would be the modern phrase for doubting and refusing to believe. Guess what? There are many doubting Thomases today. They have spent their precious time coming up with some way to say they just don't believe this bit about the resurrection. Not possible. Then it happened that Jesus came to the very place where Thomas was. Jesus knew that Thomas had doubted the report of just one week earlier about his visitation to the disciples. The one man needing proof was Thomas. So, Jesus offered Thomas all the proof he would ever need. "Reach out your hand and put it into my side," Jesus told Thomas. The Gospel of John doesn't say Thomas actually did put his finger into the side of Jesus. But it does say he ceased to doubt. How about you? What has Jesus said to you to relieve your doubts?
