Her father abused Barb. The abuse began when she was ten years old. In the beginning her father was content to make comments which tore her apart. One of his favorite comments was, "You're so stupid that you'll never pass anything." As Barb got older the abuse became more violent. At mealtimes he loved to torment her by saying, "You're so ugly and so fat that no man will ever look at you." Then he'd pinch her arms and say, "See what I mean by fat?" Or, he'd punch her in the stomach and say, "Maybe that will get rid of some fat for you." Eventually, all Barb could think about was her father's words. "What if he was right? What if she really was so fat and so ugly that no man would ever love her?" She'd never be able to get away from her father. Barb began to think about her weight. She couldn't bear the thought of gaining weight, and so she'd eat a meal and then make herself sick. Barb also began to spend hours in front of a mirror. If she could see some way of making herself beautiful, she'd be able to get away from her father. Eventually Barb began to wish that she was dead. Maybe then she'd be able to find some peace.
