Jesus had the knack of taking common things (like seeds, yeast, hidden treasure, pearls, and nets) and drawing striking insights from them that helped him explain the kingdom of heaven to the people. What contemporary objects can speak words of insight for us? Frank was in the garage, painting the shutters at his workbench. "Wacha doin', Dad?" asked Andy, who was just coming home from school. "Paintin' the shutters," he replied. " 'cept I ran out of green and have to mix the blue and yellow to finish this. Wanna help?" "Sure!" He took the paint paddle and stirred the two colors together until it looked like the shutter that was already done. "There, that should do it." "Thanks, Andy. Good job." "Hey, Dad. This is just like what we learned in Sunday school last week," Andy said. "How so?" Frank was wondering what his precocious son would come up with next. "Well, we were listening to Jesus tell all these parables about the kingdom of heaven. I bet he would have had something neat to say about this paint paddle." "Like what?" asked his dad. "Well, maybe that the kingdom of heaven is like this paint paddle, because ..." He scratched his head and looked up at the rafters for a moment. "... because it stirs all of us different colors and kinds of people together and we come out different, but very pretty."
