A young man came in...

A young man came in to talk with a pastor one day. He had come to a boom city to seek his fortune, and he had found it. He also found love and romance and seemed to be on the top of the world. But in the course of a couple of months he lost his fortune, his love, and his dream. He was truly broken inside. As the man finished sharing his painful story, the pastor asked how she could be of help, expecting to get him in contact with some of the social services available. He quickly responded, "I've already got what I came for. For two weeks I've been trying to find someone to listen to me. I haven't been to church in years, but it finally dawned on me that if I went to a church, somebody would have to listen to me." In the sound of the voice from heaven, Peter and the others heard the call to listen. It is easy to remember our call to go into the world and preach good news, but sometimes we forget the equally important call to listen -- to be attentive. It might be better to ask for a thousand ears to hear instead of a thousand tongues to sing.
