There is a new candy...

There is a new candy company named Lighthouse Confections that makes very intricate designs on lollipops using lasers. It all started when a way was invented to etch microscopic grooves on the candy surface so that they reflect light-like prisms. A newspaper article that told about the company had the headline, "Candy Dazzles the Eye." The designs and the dazzling color entice the buyer to give it a try. The temptations Jesus faced in the passage were ones that could dazzle the eye. Turning stones into bread would be quite a miracle, but would be using the power of God for a selfish reason. Jumping off the temple and having the angels catch Jesus would be sure to attract attention, but would be a foolish risk. Having the kingdoms of the world under his control would be a fantastic power, but it was offered in a way that directed worship where it should not be aimed. We, too, face temptations that catch our attention often with possibilities that dazzle as they seem so appealing. But our Lord has given us a good example as he faced the three temptations in the passage. Each time he remembered what God's Word had to say. Even when something is very enticing, we need to remember God's Word. It will direct us in the right direction to things that are most important, to things pleasing to God, to things that are lasting.
