In his book The Wounded Healer, Henri Nouwen tells the story of a fugitive who entered a village where the people were kind. They offered him a place to hide. Soldiers came looking for him, threatening to burn the village and kill every man unless they handed the fugitive over. The people went to the minister and asked him what to do. He went to his room to pray and study his Bible, hoping to find an answer from God. After many hours, the minister said: "It is better that one man dies than that the whole people be lost." Closing his Bible, he called the soldiers and told them where the boy was hiding. The soldiers led the fugitive away to kill him. The people had a feast because the minister had saved their lives. But the minister didn't celebrate. Remaining in his room in sadness, he felt the presence of an angel. "Didn't you know you handed over the Messiah?" "How could I know?" asked the minister. The angel said: "If instead of reading your Bible, you had visited this young man just once and looked into his eyes, you would have known."
