The Risen Christ not only...

The Risen Christ not only promised his followers "power from on high," but also provided them with a fresh insight into the scriptures. This wondrous gift of new discoveries within the ancient text may continue among Christ's disciples, even today.
A favorite prayer comes from Thomas Fuller, in the seventeenth century, who pondered this divine process of biblical exploration:
"Lord, this morning I read a chapter in the Bible, and therein observed a memorable passage, whereof I never took notice before. Why now, and no sooner, did I see it? Formerly my eyes were as open, and the letters as legible. Is there not a thin veil laid over Thy Word, which is more rarefied by reading, and at last wholly worn away? I see the oil of Thy Word will never leave increasingly whilst any bring an empty barrel."
In contrast, one pastor described the expectations of those who read the scriptures in a perfunctory manner: "We treat the text as a senile dinner companion who says the same thing over and over again."
