Sacraments are signs or symbols...

Sacraments are signs or symbols, instituted by Christ, that allow us to participate in our faith. We reserve the word "sacrament" for those acts which have come to have deep meaning within the Christian community and through which we have found communion with God. Protestants recognize two sacraments: the Lord's Supper and Baptism. We use symbols, like wedding rings and flags, because they communicate when words are inadequate. Saluting a flag or wearing a wedding ring speaks more eloquently of our patriotism or marital love that does any speech. Partaking of the bread and cup of Communion allows us to participate in the mystery of Christ's death and resurrection in a way that no amount of verbiage can.
