We seek the voice of authority. Jesus' voice carried it, because of who he was. There is a suspicion among us, almost always rightly founded, that no one else speaks as credibly, even though they may claim to.
Two titans of British government were contemporaries. Benjamin Disraeli and William E. Gladstone daily faced off on the floor of the House of Commons, always on opposite sides of an issue. On one occasion, following a particularly vitriolic exchange, Gladstone exploded at the Jewish statesman, "Mr. Disraeli cannot possibly be sure of his facts!" Thundered Disraeli in reply, "I wish that I could be as sure of anything as my opponent is of everything!"
