There is a picture by Derick Baegert titled Luke Painting the Virgin and Child, which shows, Luke, the Gospel writer, sitting at an easel painting a portrait of Mary, who is posing with the baby Jesus. The idea in the painting is imaginative, of course, for Luke was not a painter, but a physician. And beyond that, he wasn't even present during any of Jesus' baby or childhood years.
Yet when we read Luke chapter 2, we realize that we are viewing a word portrait of the Nativity, "painted" vividly for us with masterful use of language. He captured the wonder of the event, surely.
