In the civil war in Russia that followed the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, literally millions of peasants lost their lives over the issue of wheat. Wheat is the staff of life. The new Communist government in Russia requisitioned wheat from the peasants to feed the working class in urban centers and the Red Army. When the peasants resisted this forced take over of their produce, and later when they also resisted the forced collectivization of their farms, many were killed and others were deported, where they lost their lives enroute or in final destinations like Siberia.
