At the end of our worship service, I let the children wear my cross. Usually Emily, who is four years old, is the first child to wear it. As I lift the cross from over my head and place it around hers, I always say to her, "Will you make sure that the other children have a turn to wear it?" Emily always smiles at me as she nods her head yes and then she heads into the Fellowship Hall for a glass of juice and something to eat.
Throughout the fellowship time that follows worship, it is possible to see Emily moving from child to child, making sure that everyone has had a chance to wear my cross. When her task is done, Emily places the cross around her neck and runs to see me. Without fail Emily gives me a great big hug, and when the hug is finished she never fails to say, "Thank you, Pastor."
I've often wondered why it is that out of all the children who wear my cross, Emily is the only one who says thanks.
