There is an ancient Chinese proverb that says, "A man can stand for a long time with his mouth open before a roast duck flies in." Such was the problem that Paul was facing in the Thessalonian church. Because of a belief in the imminent return of Christ, there were Christians who were refusing to do any work. But Paul counters their laziness by encouraging them to be found engaged in fruitful ministry at the Second Coming, and not to be seen by Jesus as mere idlers, wasting the time that God has given them.
