In what is often characterized as a "dog eat dog" world, Hagar the Horrible (of comic-page fame) instructs his son, Hamlet, on this principle of life as they are walking together one day. "The secret is to destroy the other guy before he destroys you!" His son asks a rather pertinent question. "What if the other guy isn't even trying to destroy you?" Hagar's response is, "That's the chance you have to take."
Jesus offers us a totally different way of looking at the world, one that has us taking chances, to be sure, but not in the ways of destruction, but rather in construction of relationships and wholesome community.
