The arrival of a baby...

The arrival of a baby is a joyous occasion in any household. After a nine-month pregnancy, it is a time for celebration and rejoicing with a new family member. Sometimes it is not a happy occasion. The baby we waited so long to hold turns out less than perfect.
A neonatal nurse was visiting with a young Christian mother after her baby was born with a slight deformity. On the baby's left hand, the thumb was nothing but a stub.
The nurse did not know what to say to the mother. She stammered and stumbled with words to express how she felt for the mother. She finally just hugged the new mom and tears started down her cheek. She simply said, "I am so sorry. I know you were expecting a perfect baby."
The mother looked at the nurse for a minute and said, "I have a perfect baby. God was gracious to us. Aw, it's okay. Everything works well. And I didn't want him hitchhiking anyway."
When John was born, there was great anticipation. People were looking for the perfect baby. The name John is found in the families of many priests in the Hebrew Bible. (e.g. 1 Chronicles 26:3; Ezra 10:6). John means "God is gracious." The people around Elizabeth were sure that the hand of God was in this birth. They asked, "What will this child turn out to be?... The hand of the Lord was certainly with him."
And so it was. John the Baptizer was born and he grew up to baptize our Lord.
