A member of our congregation...

A member of our congregation recently returned from a trip to Peru sponsored by Medical Missions. This trip took her to the upper Amazon basin to assist with construction of both a clinic and a church. While working there, she excitedly contemplated a trip to the marketplace, for which she had brought a significant amount of money for the purchase of souvenirs. She noted the Peruvians looking at her feet and heard their quiet questions to a member of the mission team who spoke Spanish. When she inquired about their questions, the team member responded that they were interested in the cost of the hiking boots she was wearing. She stated the amount, and the team member answered that the boots cost more than these people earned in an entire year.
The woman had brought two such pairs of boots with her to Peru, and she realized that the currency in her pocket would purchase four more pair. She returned from the trip having been graced with the power of a new perspective of our culture's affluence. She reported that the shopping excursion was exchanged for the opportunity to donate the currency to the clinic's needs.
