Four brothers gathered around the bed of an 84-year-old woman late one Friday night. She had been in good health until the day before, when she came in for a hip replacement. After surgery, she developed pneumonia and the physicians gave her two days to live.
Her breathing was shallow and very labored. The doctor came in early on Sunday morning to check the patient and talk to the family. By now there were 50 members of her extended family in the hospital, waiting to see if the crisis would pass. They were praying that the doctor was wrong and the old woman would live.
One of the sons said to the doctor, "It's Sunday, and I need some time to get used to the idea that she will be gone. I am really not ready for Mom to die today."
The doctor said gently, "Any day that God calls you home, it is a good day to die."
Not many folks will have immediate healing when we lay hands upon them. In the last hours of our lives, it is important to touch, whisper and stand by someone near death. Prayers can bring miracles. Prayers can also bring healing to those left behind.
