A driver's education instructor at a high school says that one of his favorite things to do with his students is take them on a long drive, stop on the side of some busy road, and have them change a tire.
One day he took his carload of students past the junior high school at the close of the school day. He had the driver pull the car over in front of the school and told him, "Okay, let's pretend we just had a flat tire. Everybody out and help change it." What had been so easy in class was quite a bit harder in real life with an audience of junior high school students.
First the soon-to-be-drivers couldn't locate the jack or the tire iron. Then they couldn't figure out how to work the jack. Then all four students crawled underneath the car and couldn't agree on the best place to put the jack. When they finally had the car up off the ground, they couldn't seem to get the lug nuts to budge. Finally they turned to their instructor and said, "Can't we call AAA or something?"
The instructor calmly pointed over to a huge stone plaque on the front of the junior high building which read: "Few things are impossible to diligence and skill."
"See that?" he said. "The best thing you can have when you get a flat tire isn't necessarily AAA's phone number. It's diligence. Just be patient. You'll get it right."
God has that kind of patience with us. Patience because God wants us to get it right and turn away from our sins.
