In The Hero's Life, author Richard Ben Cramer acknowledges that Joe DiMaggio was one of the most skilled baseball players of all time. Yet he was immediately spoiled by the trappings of his athletic success. People viewed him as a hero because of his on-the-field performance. Off the field, however, much of his interest in others consisted in what they could do for him. And that makes for a sad biography.
In God's sight, what we accomplish is of secondary importance to our motives and goals. Being enshrined in Cooperstown and achieving Baseball Hall of Fame success is good. But having love and compassion for others is even better.
