Mike and Jerold, high school...

Mike and Jerold, high school seniors, went out to a movie on a Friday night. Jerold's father had trusted his son with the family's new car, with the admonition that Jerold be home by midnight. There was still time following the movie to get a burger and fries. At the fast-food restaurant, they ran into four more classmates, who invited themselves to go for a ride in Jerold's new car. Jerold said they would have time for only a short spin because he had to be home by 12.
They all climbed in the car. Two of the passengers suggested they go to the next town where a party was in progress.
"I told you my dad expects me to be home by midnight. If we go to the party, it will make me several hours late," Jerold explained.
But Mike didn't agree. "Come on, Jerold, what's your father going to do, kick you out of the house? He'll get over it and forgive you."
"I know he would forgive me, but I'm not willing to take advantage of his trust in me. Sorry, fellows, you'll have to get out. Mike, I'll take you home if you want to go with me."
