When outsiders look at United States military academies, they see practices that seem peculiar. For example, first-year students must daily memorize the day's menu and be able to recite it to upperclassmen.
Why? Because in the military, memorization is essential to survival. If a submarine is leaking, there is no time to research the procedures for fixing the leak. Having the necessary course of action memorized ensures survival. Uniformity in the military is essential for success under stressful conditions. Everyone must share a common understanding of what to do during an emergency.
Unity does not mean a loss of individual identity or creativity. Our differences are not erased by what we share in common. Christians are not clones ... we have different personalities, various political leanings, and even divergent religious beliefs. But we have our Savior, Jesus Christ, who rescues us from our common plight of sin. We celebrate our diversity but remain united by our common Savior.
