Have you ever had the fun and challenge of taking your dog through obedience training? Yes, it's both fun and a challenge. First thing you do is buy a choker chain and put it around your dog's neck. (It's correctly called a "choker chain.”) It's designed so that as you pull on the leash, the chain gets tighter. The dog soon learns to avoid that pull that brings the tighter chain.
You then engage in a series of exercises over a period of several days and weeks. Your dog learns to walk beside your left foot. It learns to sit when you stop, sitting right there by your left foot. By and by, you can leave your dog in a sitting position, move your hand to its nose and say firmly, "Stay,” and it will stay there until you call it to come.
I used to take our family dog named "Pupper” with me to the bank two blocks down the street from where we lived in Detroit. People waiting in line for their turn at the window would marvel and make complimentary remarks about my trained dog.
It's easier to train a dog than to train the tongue. James would agree, I think.
