We bought a bug in...

We bought a bug in 1960 -- a used Volkswagen beetle. A friend painted it for us. Its
finish was a bizarre blend of blue and green with blobs of yellow. It drove easily and
gave us new mobility. We enjoyed camaraderie with other bug owners, saluting them as
we passed on the road.
The little car ably and economically carried our family up and down the West Coast. That ended when the oil company I worked for made me sell it. It was too economical; its air- cooled engine didn't require antifreeze or radiator hoses (products oil companies liked to sell).
Until then, we had only one problem with it. Early Volkswagens lacked gas gauges. When fuel was reduced to about a gallon, the engine sputtered. No worry -- we would turn a handle underneath the dash and could travel another thirty to forty miles. If the handle was not repositioned when you refilled, however, you ran out of gas with no warning.
Volkswagens aren't as popular in the US now, but many people run out of gas even though their cars come equipped with digital gauges, warning lights, and voices. Their lives are empty because they don't fill their spiritual tanks. If you are on empty and sputtering, change your lifestyle and do what's right. Consult the Word of God -- the owner's manual -- every day. Pray. Serve Jesus and others. You'll never run empty again.
