Francis took a block of wood, sat down at the picnic table, took out some carving tools,
and began to work. The pastors at the conference would stop to watch the work on their
breaks. It wasn't long before the block of wood began to change shape. Under Francis'
guiding hands, the carving knives chipped away at the wood, chip by chip, until it began
to look like an old boot: the sole, the ragged toe, the eyelets, the laces, the tongue hanging
over the laces.
