Kendra still wonders why her single mother's factory got bought out, and they had to
move out of a school she really loved into a poorer community. Life is not fair! Kendra
was quite upset. She did nothing to deserve this, but now she must make new friends in a
school that seems to be struggling economically. This is another "theodicy" question
about the justice about a God, who demands our total allegiance. We are not to worship
other deities. If that were the case, why do good people who obey God suffer? This
remains the Job question.
God restored Job's fortunes, but only after much pain and anguish. Walter Brueggemann suggests that "Thus humankind must carry the issue of justice with courage, even while Israel knows that the issue will not win the day with Yahweh" (Theology of the Old Testament: Testimony, Dispute and Advocacy [Minneapolis: Augsburg Fortress, 1997], p. 392). In Kendra's case, she is to strive to be a faithful believer, as she pursues an education, despite the unfairness of life. She can still plead for justice and doing the right things in the eyes of God. The crucified and risen God remains at her side.
