As kids growing up, Barry and Doug were inseparable. One of their favorite projects was
a tree fort in Barry's backyard. Because the tree overlooked Doug's backyard, Doug and
Barry devised a system of communication. In the fort were two tin cans, each with a
string attached. The other end of the strings reached, one to Doug's house and the other to
Barry's, and were also attached to a can. Their dads had put a hook outside their bedroom
windows on which hung the cans. Whenever either Barry or Doug was in the fort and
wanted to contact the other, he simply yelled into the can that was attached to the
receiver's window. It worked most of the time. When the string got wet, or if it was too
loose, it didn't work. But on those days when the beckoning call was answered, it was a
magical feeling.
Today, it is not uncommon to see children playing with personal communication devices, mini-walkie-talkies or cell phones. Communications sure have come along way.
In Old Testament times God spoke through the prophets. Communications sure improved when God spoke directly through the Son!
