People sometimes come up with some strange ideas about Jesus as companion and friend. When I first saw the poem, "Footprints in the Sand," I thought, That's a nice comforting idea, but it surely isn't biblical. Then one day while researching another idea about Jesus, I came across these verses in Isaiah: "For he said, 'Surely they are my people ... And he became their savior in all their distress. It was no messenger or angel but his presence that saved them; in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; he lifted them up and carried then all the days of old" (Isaiah 63:8-9).
